CarbonPlus and Partial Fill Cavity Wall Insulation

CarbonPlus is a specially designed unbonded, non-combustible glass mineral wool product produced by Knauf Insulation. Its main purpose is to insulate already partially filled masonry cavity walls. This means that if your home is already insulated with products such as Thermalite blocks, expanded polystyrene, Kingspan, cavity batts or phenolic boards then your home can be further insulated with CarbonPlus.

CarbonPlus is fully water repellent, non-combustible and breathable allowing it to be used for smaller cavities down to a minimum of 40mm. It has also been fully tested by the British Board of Agrement (BBA) which has also been confirmed by independant research by the Energy Saving Trust.

What Does This All Mean to You?

Well, basically it means that even though your home was insulated by developers when it was built you can benefit from even greater energy savings by simply installing CarbonPlus. Also CarbonPlus is now available through the Government's ECO3 funding scheme.

This was brought about because of the need to re-insulate homes in the UK which when built met required energy efficiency requirement but now fall well short.

Changing U-Values

Dependant on what material was used and when it was installed obviously has a bearing on how energy efficient your home is.

However, using a typical 3 bed semi-detached house built in 1985 and insulated with Kingspan (Extruded Polystyrene) or similar product we can see the following benefts from further insulating with CarbonPlus :

In 1985 the required U-value (how effective a material is as an insulator) for cavity walls was 0.6 W/m2K (the W/m2K bit simply means Thermal Conductivity (also known as Lambda) which is the rate at which heat passes through a material, the lower the number the better). Currently the required U-value is 0.3 W/m2K meaning the insulating efficiency needs to be 100% improved to meet current standards and regulations.

As you can clearly see from the above example, homeowners need to be aware that although they think their homes are fully insulated, they are in fact not. Which also means that they are spending too much on energy bills.

CarbonPlus will not only improve your home's Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating but it will also reduce your energy bills as well as more efficiently keeping your home at a more ambient temperature in winter and summer!

CarbonPlus is approved by the British Board of Agrement (BBA).
